Today marks International Nurses Day 2021. It’s held every year on 12th May to commemorate the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth and to recognise the achievements of the nursing profession.
Undoubtedly, the last 18 months has seen the NHS put under an enormous amount of pressure with the on-going Coronavirus pandemic and we are continually grateful for the incredible work of the nurses and healthcare professionals on the frontline.
This year, the theme for #IND2021, set by the International Council of Nurses is: ‘Nurses: A Voice to Lead – A vision for future healthcare’. This focuses on the changes to and innovations in nursing and how this will ultimately shape the future of healthcare.
All year round, our specialist team of asbestos solicitors work closely with lung cancer nurse specialists and respiratory nurse specialists who provide vital care and support to those suffering with asbestos-related conditions such as mesothelioma. They provide vital support to those often suffering with terminal conditions with a high symptom burden.
At Hugh James, we feel privileged to be able to support them in their roles. That’s why, over recent years, we have operated an education fund to provide financial bursaries to pay for registration fees and travel and accommodation expenses at national and international training events. Many specialist nurses have utilised the fund to attend educational events conferences hosted by Lung Cancer Nursing UK, the British Thoracic Oncology Group and the International Mesothelioma Interest Group, to name but a few.
Lucy Strong, Partner within the Hugh James asbestos group commented:
“Today is a day to say ‘thank you’ to the nursing community for all that they do. The efforts of our UK nurses over the last year or so have been nothing short of heroic. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the fundamental role nursing plays in our society. However, it is important that, as the pandemic begins to subside, we do not forget the importance of our nurses to the future of our healthcare system; not just in a time of crisis but all of the time. The annual International Nurses Day celebration is extremely important in this respect because it helps to shine much needed light on our incredible nurses.”
