Our second virtual Spinal Injury Seminar was hosted by Cari Sowden-Taylor & Ciaran McCabe, both Partners in the Catastrophic Injury Claims Team here at Hugh James. The focus for the seminar was The Challenges of Neuropathic Pain.
The seminar started off with an interview with Lizzie Tench, a Peer Support Volunteer at the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA), who shared her personal experience of living with neuropathic pain with Cari Sowden-Taylor. We were also joined by Mr Naveen Kumar, a Consultant in Spinal Injuries at the Midlands Centre for Spinal Injury who discussed neuropathic pain following spinal cord injury, and then we had Dr Michael Platt, a Consultant in Pain Medicine and Anaesthetics talk about why neuropathic pain occurs after spinal surgery, and how to manage it.
We then had a presentation about an MDT approach to neuropathic pain management. For this we were joined by Janine Cadman, a Care Expert and Case Manager at Janine Cadman Consultants, James Benson, a Physiotherapist at James Benson Physiotherapy, Dr Shabnam Berry-Khan, a Clinical Psychologist at PsychWorks Associates Ltd and Annamarie Wagner, an Occupational Therapist at Wagner Therapies.
Mr Alex Alamri was our last speaker for the seminar who is leading on the Stoke Mandeville Spinal Research funded project along with Mr Erlick Pereira, exploring the use of Cingulotomy for Neuropathic Pain in people with spinal cord injury.
Our speakers were also involved in our live Q&A session at the end of the Seminar.
