We’re all being asked to ‘shine a light’ on Tuesday 12 May to mark International Nurses Day and the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale. The gesture also recognises that the World Health Organisation has designated 2020 as International Year of the Nurse.
While there’s a particular focus on the role of nurses because of the on-going coronavirus pandemic, it’s also important to recognise the expertise, care and support provided by nurses, who work in a variety of roles, all year round.
The Hugh James asbestos group works closely with lung cancer nurse specialists and respiratory nurse specialists who provide vital care and support to those suffering with asbestos-related conditions such as mesothelioma. They provide vital support to those often suffering with terminal conditions with a high symptom burden. They provide an invaluable resource.
At Hugh James, we feel privileged to be able to support them in their roles. That’s why, over recent years, we have operated an education fund to provide financial bursaries to pay for registration fees and travel and accommodation expenses at national and international training events. Many specialist nurses have utilised the fund to attend educational events conferences hosted by Lung Cancer Nursing UK, the British Thoracic Oncology Group and the International Mesothelioma Interest Group, to name but a few. We continue to welcome applications to attend relevant events.
Lucy Strong, Partner within the Hugh James asbestos group commented:
“International Nurses Day gives us a real opportunity to celebrate the fantastic work nurses undertake across the UK on a daily basis and to say thank you for all their hard work and dedication. It’s particularly relevant during the time of the on-going coronavirus pandemic. However, the selfless commitment of our nurses UK wide takes place all year round.”
