The Asbestos Team at Hugh James are long-time supporters and patrons of the British Lung Foundation (BLF). On 19 November 2019, Chris Griffiths and Angharad Jones from the team attended the BLF Study Day at Bangor University in North Wales.
Joseph Carter, Head of BLF Wales chaired the event which saw guest speakers discuss various topics in relation to respiratory health, as well as an insight session with the vocal group ‘Singing for Lung Health’ who support those suffering from long term respiratory conditions to rediscover their love of singing.
There were around 50 delegates at the event, all coming from occupational backgrounds such as respiratory nursing and respiratory physiotherapy with all having a particular interest in supporting those with chronic lung conditions.
Hugh James organised a raffle with the draw taking place at the end of the day with one lucky winner taking away a bottle of champagne.
Chris and Angharad spoke with a number of delegates throughout the day discussing the work of the asbestos team at Hugh James and how we can assist their patients suffering from an asbestos-related condition in claiming compensation. A particular highlight of the day was the insightful talk by Dr Ali Thahseen from Ysbyty Gwynedd on the current innovations in North Wales on the treatments for lung cancer.
Whilst asbestos use was banned in the UK in the late 1990s, we are still seeing large numbers of people being diagnosed with asbestos-related conditions each year. Currently, the UK has the highest mesothelioma mortality rate per capita in the world with nearly 2,500 deaths a year.
Research into asbestos-related diseases, especially mesothelioma, is incredibly underfunded compared to other conditions. The British Lung Foundation is dedicated to funding research into mesothelioma and provides grants to those who are undertaking important research in the area to ensure that detection and treatment options are at the cutting edge of what’s available worldwide.
Unfortunately for those diagnosed now, there is no cure and the only option open to them to right the wrong is to claim compensation. While compensation can never make up for what the sufferers and their families have lost, Hugh James passionately believes that their former employers or others who negligently exposed them to asbestos dust should be held accountable.
