In this week’s episode of HJ Talks About Abuse, Danielle and Hannah from the Abuse team discuss the recent headlines surrounding a sexual predator who posed as an Uber driver to sexually assault women.
The 66 year old Brighton-based Uber driver known as Graham Head, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for his crimes.
His sexual harassment of vulnerable women would involve dragging them out of his car into bushes to rape them.
Another woman reported waking up in his car to him sexually abusing her, who thankfully managed to escape by kicking him in the groin. Head was caught after a victim memorised part of his number plate.
Danielle and Hannah also debate the safety of Uber in comparison to standard taxi cabs and highlight statistics surrounding sexual assaults in Ubers in the US. According to CNN, In 2019 and 2020 they received 3,824 reports of the 5 most severe categories of sexual assault. In July 2022, Uber had been sued by 550 women for sexual assaults.
They also provide several safety measures that can be implemented when using Uber or a taxi service, to ensure that you as the passenger can get to your destination safely.
